Small group today, due to another youth event going on in the neighborhood, but we decided to go ahead with planning our service project with the two boys, with some help from little sister Raven.

Our junior youth group has helped out in the community before, participating in a volunteer day at a local community garden. This is going to be our first service project planned entirely by the group.

We decided that we wanted to visit the residents of a local nursing home. We brainstormed a list of things we could do there in addition to simply hanging out with the residents, and then the group selected their two favorites: performing a skit, and bringing home-made cards as gifts.

We started working on the skit first. Considering what the audience might enjoy, the group decided to dramatize the story of the old man and the king from Walking the Straight Path (page 9-10). We practiced several times. When Shakur was pantomiming being the old man planting date trees, Sunnie was scared that he had hurt his back! Turns out, he was just acting. Brilliant!

Afterwards, in keeping with the theme, we worked on making pop-up thank you cards for the residents, thanking them for all that they have done for the younger generations.

Shakur and Jordan work on their cards.

"Thank you for everything you did to help our city."

"Thank you for everything you did to help us and put people on this earth and the school. Thank you for everything."

These guys are just amazing. This project wouldn’t be half so fantastic if I had stuck my big adult nose into the planning and insisted on making the decisions myself. I can’t believe how lucky I am to be able to work with such a wonderful group of young people!

“Thank you for everything,” indeed.
