Today I stopped to introduce myself to Jen, the crossing guard who walks schoolkids across the street about a block from my apartment building. Turns out, we both used to work in childcare, and we’re both transitioning to new careers in healthcare. She’s lived in this town her whole life.

I walk up and down that street at least once a day. When our apartment is ready to have people over for a housewarming, I know where to find Jen. She’ll be the one with the stylish red stop sign helping everyone across the street.
